Salon Varieties Theatre

Well this Saturday (10th November 2012) was all about culture, food and music which isn’t surprising considering we hooked up with our Marbella friends Bill Padley & Karen Jane Danzig for an overnight excursion to Fuengirola. Yup we all went on holiday from Marbella to Fuengirola!

However the fun started even before our trip. After collecting Bill and Karen we all headed to the Homes and Garden Show in Estepona to check out the stalls and catch up with various friends. There were jewellery stands, funeral directors (£400 discount on that day only), soaps, candles and even bowls (I won’t embarrass Hannah Murray of Talk Radio Europe by posting the video of her poor attempt at bowls – there is plenty of embarrassing material later in this article).

Karen on the other hand was mainly disappointed because the floor was not carpeted (don’t ask – but she did provide us with a good 15 minutes of laughter so well done Karen).

After grabbing a quick photo of Charlie Dimmock (who now looked nothing like the photos hanging on every wall to promote her being there, mainly due to the fact that they were of her from around 1997).

Back in the car and we headed for Fuengirola to find the studio apartment booked for just 40 euros, front line beach with amazing views over the sea – bargain! A quick change of clothes and it was off to the Salon Varieties theatre for the main event of the night, to see a production of Calendar Girls. I personally had never been to the Salon Varieties and neither had Bill or Karen so thankfully Hannah knew her way around and got us there in plenty of time.

After a little bit of irrational behaviour from some old guy who clearly was the self-appointed queue monitor for the night, we grabbed drinks and headed inside to watch the production.

The theatre was incredible and the show was amazing as was the acting. It was to a very high standard and we all really enjoyed the production.

After the show we headed out for something to eat and were looking for a place called MOOBS according to Hannah. Well that was until we came across a place called MOOCHERS (the place she was thinking about but had convinced herself it was called Moobs for some reason – NOOO don’t look at me, they are not that bad).

OMG the food was incredible – the girls had savoury pancakes which were the size of large pizzas. I had chilli ribs and Bill had beef stroganoff and we all ate and sang along to the live entertainment.

After eating (and enjoying the free calypso coffee) we went on a hunt for a Karaoke bar (easier said than done). One thing I have learnt about Fuengirola is that nobody seems to know how to direct people or remember the names of places. We were on the hunt for a bar called Linda’s, as recommended by a girl that works there who was enjoying a night off. So off we set asking people directions along the way (which incidentally all seemed to be ‘take the second turning on the left and it’s just up there’), no matter where you were. A 7 foot smart arse Dutch bouncer at a club sent us around in circles, clearly his entertainment for the night. We considered sending Bill back to give him some Scottish kiss but thought better of it. Eventually we found Linda’s bar and in we piled.

This was Karaoke (around 5 hours of it in the end) and one after another, solo performances, duet after duet, Bill, Karen and Hannah wooed the audience with a range of songs from Black Velvet to I’ve had the time of my life. It was a truly fun night which involved lots of laughter, drink and more laughter – the perfect night out really. Needless to say we all slept well in preparation for the HUGE full English breakfast Sunday morning accompanied by a music quiz (randomly).
