It was raining cats and dogs again on Saturday night so we were glad that we had made arrangements for a night that centred on being indoors. Michelle Mack kindly picked us up and we headed out of Marbella to Fuengirola along roads which in places resembled small rivers.
Having safely negotiated the water hazards, Michelle parked us in the underground car park and we headed for the Salon Varieties Theatre huddled under umbrellas and taking the scenic route.
Hannah and Michelle headed to the ticket office while I took a deep breath and waded into the bar which was now two, maybe three people deep. At last drinks purchased just as the bell tolled to advise us all that we need to take our seats for tonight’s performance of Annie.
Our seats were up with the Gods but the theatre is well laid out so we could still see everything that was going on and we were also delighted to see a packed house. Lights dimmed and the performance began.
I had never seen Annie before, not the film or the stage show. Hannah had seen the film and not the stage show whereas Michelle was actually IN the original production of Annie in the West End.
Well the opening scene was incredible and the lead playing Annie had a truly amazing voice. The girl who played the young orphan Molly also captured the hearts of the audience and got lots of laughs with her performance. The whole production was to a very high standard and the scenery and choreography was superb. I was transfixed and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next.
Each song was greeted with rapturous applause and at the end of the show the cast were given a standing ovation. I suppose one person who could provide the best opinion was Michelle, having been in the original version and she was also very complimentary of this amateur production.
A great night was had by all and congratulations to the Salon Varieties in Fuengirola for yet another great night. It is a real shame that there is nothing like this located in Marbella. But I guess a little trip away from Marbella now and again is not a bad thing.
