Audrey Hepburn

There was a very interesting story in the Sur in English this week so we have summarised the content, although the full article can be found here.

When it comes to Celebrities in Marbella, they do not get much bigger than the iconic star of Breakfast at Tiffany’s Audrey Hepburn. According to the article she was a regular visitor to the Costa del Sol. Often seen at beach picnics in the famous Marbella Club (where else would you expect) and stopping the crowds as she partied at the La Jacaranda nightclub.

Her partying in Marbella was infamous as was the company she kept. Audrey Hepburn was seen out many times with the former spy, Countess of Romanones.

Style was something Audrey Hepburn was always known for and when she came to Marbella she was seen out wearing fashion from some of the very best designers of the time, namely Givenchy, Dior and Paco Rabanne.

Marbella was top of the list for many top Hollywood stars in the 1960’s and Audrey loved the Marbella glamour so much she even purchased a property here. Like many of the top celebrities she stayed very close to Mr Marbella, Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe and her house was within the Marbella Club itself.

Audrey Hepburn was already a household name when she came to Marbella, having appeared in some of the most well known and much loved films, some of which are still some of the most viewed films even to this day.

She came initially, it is said because of her husband and fellow actor Mel Ferrer who although American descended from Catalan roots and he as keen to come back and learn more about his Spanish heritage.

Mel and Audrey have a son called Sean and they were often seen out and about in Marbella at bull fights, on donkey rides and even being photographed at La Malagueta in Malaga during the August fair.

Their home in Marbella was thanks to Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe who showed them a beautiful plot of land by the beach on the famous Golden Mile right next to the Marbella Club. They fell in love with it and built their home, which was to be called Santa Catalina.

Sadly the love between Mel and Audrey faded and after their split she left the house to Mel and never returned. While Santa Catalina still exists it is unrecognisable as the house that Audrey Hepburn ones owned. It is now owned by an Arab sheikh and has been completely re-styled.
