Filming in Marbella

The celebrities are in Malaga and Marbella over the next couple of weeks!

A leisurely stroll through Malaga in the upcoming fortnight holds more than just a display of enticing shop windows and a delightful ambiance. It also presents a strong likelihood of encountering a film shoot. In fact, up to three television series, both domestic and international, have secured time and space in the city centre to film their latest seasons, making Malaga a mini Hollywood during the next two weeks.

Netflix, returns to Malaga to film the second season of the Spanish comedy “Machos Alfa,” along with their new ambitious production, “Kaos,” which adds additional scenes to those previously captured last year.

The third series, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” focuses on the Holocaust and is produced by the American streaming platform Hulu, a subsidiary of the Disney Group. Besides the historic city centre, the production crews have also set their sights on Marbella, where filming for the Hulu series commenced on Monday, 15th May, exploring the World War II era.

The first production to arrive in the heart of Malaga on Tuesday, 16th May, is “Machos Alfa,” a franchise created by siblings Laura and Alberto Caballero (known for “La que se Avecina”) for Netflix. In the second season, the original characters, four friends overwhelmed by today’s empowered women, return with humor, clichés, and thought-provoking subjects that delve into masculinity, the decline of patriarchy, toxic relationships, and role reversals through the lens of equality.

The series will be filmed in Malaga city centre and a beach bar in Pedregalejo before moving to an exclusive beach club in Marbella on Wednesday, 17th May. Moreover, they have planned a night shoot in a mansion on the Costa del Sol for Friday. Additionally, the schedule includes a brief stop in Tarifa (Cadiz) to complete the Andalusian filming.

Following “Machos Alfa,” the adaptation of the novel “We Were the Lucky Ones” takes its turn, recounting the story of writer Georgia Hunter’s family during the Second World War and the Jewish Holocaust. This project, produced in Spain by Fresco Film, based in Malaga, for Old 320 Sycamore and the Twentieth Television studio, aims to transform Calle San Juan into a Brazilian corner on Thursday, 18th May, for the filming of street scenes.

Consequently, one of the establishments on this central street has been converted into a bookbinding and leatherwork workshop, as can be observed from the striking Portuguese signs painted on the shop’s façade by the series’ art team.

The series, like the others, enjoys the support of the Malaga Film Office. After a stopover in Marbella on Monday, 15th May, where filming began for this ambitious international production, utilizing the renowned wooden pontoon of the Marbella Club Hotel for a scene set on the Brazilian coast.

Visitors to the club could catch glimpses of extras dressed in period costumes and 1940s soldiers, as well as Lihi Kornowski (known for “Crimes of the Future”) and Logan Lerman (renowned for the Percy Jackson saga). However, the main character, portrayed by American actor Joey King (featured in “Bullet Train”), was absent.

This mini-series arrives in Malaga after shooting most of its scenes in Romania. It concludes the filming of the tale centered around a Jewish family from Poland who, following the Nazis’ invasion of their homeland, faces extermination when they are separated into German ghettos, farms, and factories, all the while attempting to escape their tragic fate.

The third series, “Kaos,” a Netflix production that intertwines elements of a thriller with Greek mythology, returns to Malaga after having filmed its second season here and starring Jeff Goldblum.
